IALP Participants Complete Communication Excellence Seminar, Sponsored by ADM

The Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program (IALP) Class of 2018 was provided in-depth communication skills training at John Deere World Headquarters in Moline, December 14-16, 2016.  Over the course of three days, participants learned the value of communication and relationship building in developing strong leadership for agriculture.

The seminar began with a session on “Effective Influence and Negotiation” presented by Jen Ohrt, HR Integrator for Deere and Company.  During her presentation, Jen was joined by Deanna Hutcherson, Program Manager of Strategic Workforce Planning and Human Resources Business Support, and Steve Speich, Global Director, Facilities Engineer.  Hutcherson and Speich gave personal testimony about how they have developed as effective leaders by using influence in both personal and professional relationships.  Following that, the class heard from John May, President of Agricultural Solutions and Chief Information Officer for Deere and Company. He led a discussion on “A Leader’s Approach to Influencing and Negotiation,” citing his leadership role in the organization and how to influence others for the success of the company.

A day-long workshop on “Communication Training” was facilitated by presenters from Dardis Communications, in which participants learned specific presentation skills and techniques.  The day was capped by a reception with IALP alumni at the John Deere Pavilion in downtown Moline.

The final day of the seminar consisted of Class of 2018 participants giving presentations that utilized skills learned in the previous day.  Dardis Communications also taught a session on how to efficiently “Brief the Boss.”  Class members ultimately learned to be more effective communicators as they develop the proper skills to be leaders for agriculture.

The seminar was sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland, a long-time supporter of the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation.  The Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation provides a 19-month seminar series that develops knowledgeable and effective leaders to become policy and decision makers for the agricultural industry, in addition to Advanced Leadership Training for program alumni, commodity organizations and other agricultural organizations. It is a non-profit educational corporation under Illinois law. A board of directors, comprised of recognized leaders in agriculture and business, oversees the program.
